Ingredients

Cooking spra

1 (12-oz.) pkg. savory butter rolls

6 Tbsp. (3 oz.) unsalted butter, divided

1 large (13 oz.) sweet onion, thinly sliced (about 3 cups)

1 lb. thinly sliced deli roast beef

6 (3/4-oz.) sharp provolone cheese slices

1 1/2 tsp. light brown sugar

1 Tbsp. Dijon mustard

1/2 tsp. kosher salt

2 1/2 tsp. fresh thyme leaves, divided

1 tp. minced garlic

1 cup beef broth

Directions

step 1

Turn the oven on to 350°F. Spray cooking spray on a 13 x 9-inch baking dish and set it aside.

step 2

Keeping the top and bottom halves whole, cut the rolls in half horizontally with a serrated bread knife. Place the bottom half of the rolls in the baking dish that has been prepared and put aside.

step 3

In a medium-sized nonstick skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium-high heat. Add the onions and simmer, stirring frequently, for about 2 minutes, or until softened. Turn down the heat to medium and simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring now and again, until soft and golden brown. Take off the heat and place aside.

step 4

Evenly distribute roast beef slices over the bottom halves of the rolls. Arrange the caramelized onions and cheese evenly on top, then cover with the top half of the buns.

step 5

Stir together 4 tablespoons of brown sugar andPut the butter in a small saucepan over low heat and stir occasionally for about five minutes, or until the sugar is dissolved. Take off the heat and mix in the salt and mustard. Drizzle the rolls' tops and sides with the butter mixture, then top with one teaspoon of thyme. Bake the baking dish for ten minutes in a preheated oven with the aluminum foil loosely covering it. Take off the foil and bake for about ten minutes, or until the tops of the buns are golden brown and the cheese has melted.

step 6

Melt the last tablespoon of butter in a small saucepan over medium heat in the meanwhile. Add the garlic and heat, stirring frequently, for about 30 seconds, or until fragrant. Add Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, and the last of the 1 1/2 tablespoons of thyme. Bring to a simmer over medium heat; cook, uncovered, for about ten minutes, or until slightly reduced.
